JDUSD Offers Students Exciting Field Trips to Aid in Engaged Learning

Field trips have been a staple in modern education for years, but many schools suffering from budget cuts have seen a decrease in the amount of field trips they can offer students. The Jamul-Dulzura Union School District (JDUSD) in rural San Diego County, California, however is keeping the benefits and traditions of field trips alive and well for their Kindergarteners through eighth graders.

At the elementary level, K-5 students are offered field trips that help students have educational experiences outside the walls of the classroom and give students the chance to encounter environments outside their normal days. Jamul-Dulzura students have had the chance to visit places that help them understand history, visit and learn about farming, dairy production, and raising animals, music, and protecting the environment and animal habitats.

Each grade has exciting trips to look forward to as they advance through their elementary grades. Kindergarten visits the pumpkin patch, first graders visit numerous theater events, second graders go to the zoo, third graders visit Indian Hills, Classics for Kids, and Old Town San Diego. Fourth graders learning about California Missions have the opportunity to visit local San Diego County missions, and fifth graders visit an ecology preservation.

The middle school students are also given exceptional opportunities to experience new things. Sixth graders at Oak Grove Middle School enjoy a week of outdoor learning at Camp Cuyamaca. Sixth grade camp is a wonderful experience for students to gain a sense of independence and learn about outdoor environments they may never experience otherwise. Other educational and fun-filled field trips for the middle school students at JDUSD include the Honor Roll field trip for grades six through eight, Constitutional Competition, and end of year eighth grade trip to Aquatica. Some of these field trips are free for the students and are funded by the district, while others are partially funded by parents, PTSA and ASB.

The students in the Jamul-Dulzura Union School District also enjoy new technology to go on virtual field trips. With Google VR, teachers can take their entire classroom on field trips anywhere in the world! Students can see and experience things traditional field trips wouldn’t be able to offer them, and teachers can plan virtual trips for every lesson. These up close experiences, weather in person or virtually, help ignite a curiosity for learning and a love for the world.
