Non-Profit Organization Mishkiki Provides Invaluable Education, Inspiration, and Empowerment to Youth

Toronto, ON – Canada’s newest and most thriving non-profit organization, Mishkiki, is pleased to announce it is providing invaluable education, inspiration, and empowerment to youth.

Mishkiki facilitates Interactive Youth Empowerment Workshops for First Nations communities, Friendship Centers, and school boards all across Canada. The organization also hopes to utilize their Social & Economic Development departments to remediate contaminated soil for First Nations communities, such as Atikamekw Opitciwan, Kitigan Zibi and Kahnawake by using industrial hemp.

Though the organization is high-profile today, it started with mere humble beginnings as a service provided by a “for-profit” company, Empire Culture & Music. The success attained by the company’s ability to adapt to any situation and persevere over any obstacle has created a solid foundation for the new organization, Mishkiki.

The word “Mishkiki” is the Anishinaabemowin word for medicine for the Algonkin, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Cree, Oji-Cree and Odawa people.

“We have chosen the name Mishkiki to signify the healing power of our organization,” says Joshua Martin, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Mishkiki. “Our primary focus is to provide education, inspiration, and empowerment through our workshops, and to provide economic, social, and community development opportunities to all First Nations Communities.”

Past and current Mishkiki projects include:

  • Economic consultation and development
  • Art and cultural revitalization
  • Clean drinking water initiatives
  • Housing initiatives
  • Self-sustainability
  • Renewable resource development
  • Strategic investments
  • Infrastructure management

“One of our most memorable projects we participated in was when we were hired to facilitate a March-Break camp for youth by the Greater Essex District School Board in Windsor, Ontario,” states Martin. “The age group was much younger than the usual 12-29 demographic we specialize in and without hesitation the facilitators, Jared BigCanoe and myself, developed new content and activities to ensure a successful 3 day event.”

“Another example was a highway closure on route to their North Eastern Ontario destination of Pic Mobert First Nation,” Martin continues. “The closure resulted to a logging road detour which took an additional 9 hours to drive. We arrived just before the start of their event at 9 AM and without sleeping the night before and did another outstanding workshop for the youth.”
